NETWORK IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
AUTOMATIC PLATFORM GATES INSTALLATION ON EAST RAIL LINE
To enhance the passenger service of the East Rail Line, installation of Automatic Platform Gates (APGs) has commenced progressively. About 1,600 pairs of APGs will be installed at 35 platforms, spanning across 13 stations on the East Rail Line (excluding Hung Hom, Exhibition Centre, and Admiralty stations). This is a significant asset upgrade project of the network of East Rail Line.
Installation of APGs along the operating East Rail Line is a complex and challenging project. The Corporation has completed key preparatory works before the installation of APGs. These preparations include the enhancement of platform structure to support the installation of 45 pairs of APGs, each weighing 0.5 tons. The project team has overcome various challenges by learning from experience during the process, hence some of the works could be completed ahead of schedule. The progress of works is satisfactory so far.

In order to maintain the normal operation of daily train services, installation of APGs for most stations could only be carried out during non-traffic hours overnight, which also known as the “golden two hours”. The Corporation, wherever possible and without interruption to the railway service, will install APGs at stations with spare platforms during specific non-peak hours in the daytime. The team will thrive all the efforts to manage the progress and it is expected the project will be completed in 2025.
