Train Improvement Works

New Train

To maintain high quality railway service for customers and as part of its long-term asset renewal strategy, the Corporation is spending $6 billion to purchase 93 new 8-car trains to replace all of the first-generation trains now operating on the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island and Tseung Kwan O lines.

The new trains are progressively delivered to Hong Kong. Upon arrival, the trains undergo stringent testing and commissioning procedures, and are required to obtain approval from the relevant Government departments before putting into service.

The first new train commenced service on 27 Nov 2022 on the Kwun Tong Line. Starting from 28 Jan 2024, the Island Line is the second urban line with new trains operating. The new trains not only provide a better travel experience to passengers, but also enhance operational reliability. Trains on the Tsuen Wan Line and Tseung Kwan O Line will also be replaced soon in a progressive and orderly manner.

These new trains are equipped with advanced operating systems and a number of new features in the passenger compartments to enhance customer service and passenger comfort, including improved lighting systems, new dynamic route maps, double branched handrails and soft material introduced for the straphangers.
