Western District is home to a large number of historic heritage buildings, with many iconic buildings concentrated within Sai Ying Pun. During the summer of 2010, Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation invited a group of young people to explore the area with an artist and capture images of local heritage buildings, including Kau Yan Church, The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage, King’s College and Sai Ying Pun Community Complex.
Specially-designed one-metre tall pinhole cameras were used for the project, where captured images were exposed onto multiple rolls of film at the same time. As such, the young people were able to take shots wider than normal, and create images that have a unique touch and composition.
The final photographs were then pieced together using interlacing, resulting in two large stunning panoramic filmstrips that serve both as a record of local heritage buildings and as encouragement for viewers to see their surroundings from a different perspective.
