Bridging the difference between French and Chinese cultures, French graphic designer Ms Emilie Saint-Pe uses Chinese characters to create visual art pieces that convey the meaning of common French expressions. Ms Saint-Pe's artwork are now on show in the latest "art in mtr - arttube" exhibition entitled "…Comme chien et chat", French for "like cats and dogs". The exhibition opens today (19 September 2011) and will run until 11 November 2011 at MTR Central Station (Entrance/Exit J).
Chinese and French have two distinct cultures and two very different languages. It is in these differences that Ms Sain-Pe draws her inspiration. By juxtapositoining the relevant Chinese characters in a picture that visualises the meaning of well-known French idioms. She aims to build a bridge between her native country, France, and her new home in China.
"I've taken art, language, and culture to interpret commonly used idioms in both the East and West in a refreshing and humourous way," said Ms Saint-Pe. "I hope MTR passengers, regardless of their nationality, will enjoy these illustrations and find common ground between their own culture and those of foreign lands."
