Over 50 Chinese round-shaped fans painted with traditional New Year wishes are now offering greetings for the Year of the Ox to passengers at MTR Tin Hau Station. The traditional paintings incorporated with Chinese calligraphy are exhibits in the latest "art in mtr – roving art" exhibition entitled "Gathering to Welcome Spring, Luck is on the Way in the Year of the Ox".
Jointly organised by the MTR Corporation and Bishop Walsh Primary School (A.M.), the exhibition is being held at the upper platform of MTR Tin Hau Station from today (23 January) to 22 February 2009 and at MTR Kowloon Tong Station from 25 February to 18 March. The artworks were created by 6 to 13-year-old students and feature harvest scenes, Chinese gods, flowers, birds, fish and animals, signifying happiness, good fortune, prosperity, peace and unity.
"The Lunar New Year is the most important festival for Chinese people," said Ms Lee Lai-Mui, Principal of Bishop Walsh School (A.M.). "It is a joyous time of the year when families gather for reunions. The round-shaped fans represent unity in Chinese as the character for 'round' also means 'unity'. Through painting the fans, students enhance their knowledge of Chinese tradition."
"The fan paintings are also a rich demonstration of traditional Chinese art," said Mrs Miranda Leung, General Manager – Corporate Relations of the MTR Corporation. "We invite MTR passengers passing through Tin Hau Station on their way to or from the Flower Market at Victoria Park to enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year and this artistic Chinese tradition."
