Using her imagination and precision handiwork, amateur quilling artist Ms Clare Wong has created spring flowers, firecrackers, New Year's delicacies and a tiger for display in MTR stations to celebrate the coming Year of the Tiger. The latest "art in mtr - roving art" exhibition entitled "Quill for New Year Blessings" is now open at MTR Tin Hau Station until 23 February 2010 and will be on display at MTR Fanling Station from 26 February to 29 March 2010.
"The Lunar New Year is a cheerful time of the year, when families and friends unite, enjoy delicious meals together, and look ahead to the coming year with optimism," said Mrs Miranda Leung, General Manager - Corporate Relations of the MTR Corporation. "The flowers created by Ms Wong symbolise the beginning of Spring. We invite MTR passengers passing through Tin Hau and Fanling stations to enjoy the festive atmosphere and view the meticulously quilled artworks."
Quilling has appeared in Eastern and Western cultures throughout history, dating back as early as the 4th century in various parts of Europe. The art of quilling involves rolling or curling very thin strips of paper into scroll shapes and creating artistic designs with the various shapes, which are then glued onto a base.
Amateur artist Clare Wong has produced more than 30 art pieces for this exhibition. "Quilling is an easy and inexpensive art form that has such a colourful history," said Ms Wong. "I hope to spread the joy of the coming Year of the Tiger while inspiring MTR passengers to learn more about this ancient art form."
"art in mtr - roving art" features temporary art exhibitions at different MTR stations. About 10 exhibitions are held each year to promote local artistic talent and the public's appreciation of art.
