Innovative and environmentally friendly design solutions for small living spaces created by Hong Kong students are in the spotlight in a new "art in MTR – roving art" exhibition which opens at MTR Sheung Wan Station today (15 July 2014).
Entitled "Social Innovation Inventor - Competition for Innovative Design", the exhibition features prize-winning and shortlisted entries from a contest for secondary and tertiary institution students to design a multi-purpose bed that can enhance living conditions for under-privileged families living in sub-divided flats. The 13 designs on display incorporate a range of creative ideas to enhance energy saving and improve ventilation as well as to provide comfortable living conditions and smart storage options.
"The students responded very enthusiastically to this challenge and their entries are not only clever and practical but also show their care and understanding for the problems faced by less fortunate members of the society. We hope this caring spirit and social and environmental awareness will be spread more widely through the exhibition and help to inspire the whole community," said Dr William Yu, Chief Executive Officer of World Green Organisation, an environmental group that organised the design competition with sponsorship from MTR Corporation.
"Hong Kong's younger generation is incredibly talented and we at MTR are committed to helping them develop and become our city's future leaders. This exhibition is a great example of the way we can encourage our young people to develop their abilities and also share their ideas for creating a more inclusive society with MTR passengers," said Mr Jay Walder, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.
The prize-winning designs in the competition were selected from among 92 designs by a judging panel including representatives from World Green Organisation, MTR Corporation, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited as well as members from universities and creative design industry based on creativity, practicability, durability, appearance, materials used and design potential.
The top prize for each category was a study trip to the world-famous University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and the winners would have an opportunity to appreciate the cutting-edge technology during their visit to the Big Innovation Centre at London. "Live. Move. Bamboo" , the winning design from a three-member team in the tertiary category, features a bamboo entrance gate to aid air flow into sub-divided flats as well as a range of adaptable, multi-functional furniture.
"We drew inspiration from the unique nature of bamboo which can help to keep the area cooler, while our moveable furniture creates more space for families to interact with each other for harmonious living," said Mr Hung Chun-hong, a member of the winning team."
The "Social Innovation Inventor - Competition for Innovative Design" roving art exhibition at MTR Sheung Wan Station runs through to 11 August. It will be then moved to MTR Tiu Keng Leng Station from 14 August to 15 September.
