OCT Art and Design Gallery
First design-themed multi-use art museum simulating “Water Cube” with a honeycomb facade!
Forming a complementary “art triangle” of cultural and art resources, the three art venues located in Nanshan District namely, The OCT Art and Design Gallery, He Xiangning Art Museum and OCT-Contemporary Art Terminal, promote Chinese art with a distinct positioning of each of its own. In particular, The OCT Art and Design Gallery, which resembles the Water Cube (National swimming centre in Beijing), is China’s first design-themed art museum. Through a combination of exhibition, education, collection and research, the gallery connects the public with design, art and culture, making it a must-go attraction for the art-savvy.
Converted from an old warehouse, the gallery features signature glass curtain walls arranged in hexagonal steel structures, creating a spectacular and highly futuristic impression. As if the “Water Cube” had been relocated from Beijing to Shenzhen, the gigantic honeycomb-like architecture has become a popular destination for snapshots. Adding a touch of industrial style to the interior of the gallery, the concrete grey décor is matched with a stylish mix of traditional and modern elements.
With a gross floor area of 3,000 square metres, the gallery is a modern multi-purpose art museum built to international standards. It boasts exhibition halls that span 2,000 square metres and a repository for paintings, all equipped with an advanced temperature monitoring system for professional artwork display and collection. An art salon has been set up to facilitate exchange and sharing among artists, connoisseurs, collectors and the audience. Who says art is hard to reach?
The gallery presents a diverse range of exhibits, including graphic design, spatial design, product design, costume design, digital images, anime and comics, and scriptures, just to name a few. While there is no permanent exhibition, special exhibitions are hosted from time to time. If you are wondering what’s on in the gallery, simply follow the WeChat official account of The OCT Art and Design Gallery for updates.
Friendly reminder: Free admission on every Tuesday (except for national holidays and special exhibitions)
While The OCT Art and Design Gallery is dedicated to the art of design, the nearby He Xiangning Art Museum is to women’s art, and OCT-Contemporary Art Terminal focusing on experimental art and the Avant-garde. Forming a major landmark in Shenzhen which is dubbed the “City of Design”, each of the venues has its unique positioning and differentiated strengths in exhibit collections that every art and culture enthusiast must not miss.
