Tap to ride with Contactless Bank Cards at the Light Blue gates with more card options!

Tap to ride with Visa!

Starting from 24 August 2024, passengers can use Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay Contactless Bank Cards* to enter and exit the gates for MTR rides, offering extra convenience to locals and travellers with additional e-payment choices to promote smart mobility!

*Credit Card or Debit Card (not including UnionPay Debit Card)

Remark: Not available for Airport Express stations, Light Rail and MTR Bus, other fare concessions by MTR and the Government's Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme are not applicable

MTR continues to enhance our contactless bank card payment service! Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay contactless credit cards or debit cards^ will be accepted for paying MTR fares from 24 August 2024.

^not including UnionPay Debit Card

Note: Only credit cards or debit cards with a near-field communication (NFC) antenna plus a Contactless Indicator shown on the card are compatible for tapping in and out the gates for MTR rides.

Use the Light Blue gates for tapping in and out

Use the "Light Blue gates" and tap your contactless credit card, debit card, or any payment-enabled device, such as mobile phones or smart watches, at the designated processor with a Contactless Symbol.

In addition to physical contactless credit card and debit card, the gates also accept multiple payment-enabled devices, such as mobile phones or smart watches, for paying MTR fares. More choices for smart travel!
Octopus Processor

Using your Contactless Bank Cards (Credit Cards or Debit Cards) to Travel First Class

For passengers who wish to travel First Class on the East Rail Line, please validate the same contactless credit card or debit card (or the payment device) used for entering the gate at the "First Class Processor" before entering the First Class compartment. The screen will show a notification message once the Contactless Bank Card has been validated. The processors are located on the platforms of the East Rail Line or beside the gangway doors of the First Class compartment.

Fare transaction records at a glance through designated "Contactless Bank Cards Transaction Portal"

Adopting the "Ride First, Pay Later" model, the system will normally calculate the total accumulated fare for MTR rides daily and collect the fare from passengers accordingly. Passengers can view the daily records through their bank statements.

Passengers can instantly check their transactions and travel records paid with contactless credit cards or debit cards through the “Contactless Bank Cards Transaction Portal” after completing each MTR journey.

Contactless Bank Card^ fares:

  • Contactless Bank Card^ fare is the same as Adult Octopus fare. Other fares (e.g. Child/Concessionary/Elderly, etc.) are not applicable.
  • Other fare concessions by MTR and the Government's Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme are not applicable to Contactless Bank Card^.
  • MTR rides that interchange at Tsim Sha Tsui station/East Tsim Sha Tsui station will be considered as two separate single journeys and be charged separately.

  • Question: Can I enjoy fare concessions by using contactless bank cards for MTR rides?

    Answer: Contactless Bank Card fare is equivalent to Adult Octopus fare, all other fare concessions and Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme are not applicable.

  • Question: Can I enjoy interchange discount at Tsim Sha Tsui/East Tsim Sha Tsui stations by using contactless credit cards or debit cards for MTR rides?

    Answer: No. MTR rides which interchange at Tsim Sha Tsui/East Tsim Sha Tsui station will be considered as two separate single journeys when using contactless credit cards or debit cards for travel.

  • Question: Can I enter the gate with a physical contactless credit card but exit with another payment-enabled device (e.g. mobile phone or smart watch)?

    Answer: No, you must use the same physical bank card or payment-enabled device to enter and exit the gate.

  • Question: If I have multiple contactless bank cards in my wallet, will I be charged twice?

    Answer: No, the card reader can only read and connect with one contactless card (or payment-enabled device) at a time. If you have more than one contactless bank card in your wallet, please take out the one you want to use and tap it on the designated processor, rather than tapping your whole wallet.

  • Question: I frequently use my contactless credit card for MTR rides. Why does my bank statement only show one transaction record per day?

    Answer: Adopting the "Ride First, Pay Later" model, the system will calculate the total accumulated fare for MTR rides daily and collect the fare from passengers accordingly. Passengers can view the daily records through their bank statements. In some cases, the total accumulated fare listed in the bank statements may include rides of more than one day.

  • Question: Does MTR accept contactless credit cards or debit cards issued in Mainland China or Overseas for travelling? How would the fares be calculated?

    Answer: In general, the system accepts contactless credit cards or debit cards issued in Mainland China or Overseas for MTR rides (acceptance may vary by different card issuing banks). All relevant MTR fares will be settled in Hong Kong Dollars in which the exchange rates for related foreign currencies will vary by different card issuing banks. Some card issuing banks may also charge a fee for international transactions, please contact your card issuing banks for details.

  • Question: Why can't I tap my Bank Co-brand Octopus at the contactless bank card processor of the "Light Blue gate"?

    Answer: Bank Co-brand Octopus are not compatible with contactless credit card or debit card payment function. Therefore, when passing through the gate, you should use it in the same way as a regular Octopus by tapping the Bank Co-brand Octopus at the Octopus Processor located above the gate for riding MTR.

  • Question: Why is the system charging $0.1 for pending transactions when using Mastercard or UnionPay contactless bank cards?

    Answer: This is generally a security measure to confirm the validity of your contactless bank card. MTR won't actually post the charge but the amount may be held for a period of time. Normally, it won't appear as a charge on your bank statement.
