System Location:
Hin Keng Station Rooftop
System Completion Date:
May 2022
Technology Introduction:
Monocrystalline solar panels are a type of photovoltaic panel made from a single, continuous crystal structure of silicon. When comparing with other common commercial types of solar cells, monocrystalline panels are having in general a higher efficiency in converting energy from sunlight into electricity, reaching more than 20%. The generated energy is used to support station facilities.
Apart from panel efficiency, the structural loading is also one of the important factors to be considered for the installations at MTR premises. A trial is being conducted at Hin Keng Station to install solar panels in different types of station rooftop areas: (i) rigid monocrystalline solar panels are fixed at the station concourse aluminium cladding roofs; and (ii) flexible monocrystalline solar panels are installed at the station concrete roofs which can minimise the rooftop loadings.
In future, more solar projects will be rolled out at our stations and depots, in support of the company's carbon reduction targets and the development of renewable energy in Hong Kong.
